Each week throughout this season, Rise Up will feature a Player of the Week from each of the 4 main area codes across the state. We just wrapped up the ninth week of the season and the votes are in!! Read below about Lay Mayes, the 270/364 Player of the Week for this week.

Mayes did all she could to help her team in the All A Classic. Despite coming up short, she was huge down the stretch in their opening game versus Walton-Verona. Out of her team’s 30 points, Mayes scored 16 of them while almost achieving a double-double with 8 rebounds and 2 steals. She also played a big part in helping her team make it to the state tournament, defeating 3 teams to win the 1st Region. Here were her stats in those games:

• – 20 points and 7 rebounds on 9-for-15 (60%) shooting from the field (58-32 win over St. Mary)
• – 27 points and 6 rebounds on 9-for-15 (60%) shooting from the field and 4-for-7 (57.1%) shooting from 3 (46-39 win over Ballard Memorial)
• – 13 points and 4 rebounds (41-24 win over Fulton County in the regional finals)

Mayes is only a sophomore, so you can expect to hear her name even more in the future, but don’t sleep on what she is doing now. She is an unselfish player who can put up some big time numbers. She is proving to be one of the top players in the region and across the state.
