A woman who is considered to be one of the greatest women’s basketball and a co-founder of the Unrivaled League alongside Naphessa Collier and her name is Breanna Stewart.
Breanna Stewart aka Stewie, has a decorated resume that includes 4 NCAA Titles, 4 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Awards, 3 Olympic Gold Medals, 2- WNBA Championships and 5 WNBA All-Stars. Stewart is a part of a unique group of 11 athletes to win an Olympic gold medal, FIBA World Cup gold medal, WNBA championship and an NCAA championship.
She’s a dominant two-way player that can get it done on both ends of the court, during the current 2024 WNBA season, she’s averaging 19 points, 9 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals. She’s known for being a 3-level scorer that can step out from behind the arc and knock down the 3 consistently as a big. Her 6’4 frame coupled with a 7’1 wingspan is also something to take into account because she’s always able to get her hand on anything defensively which contributes to her incredible amount of steals and blocks. The force that Stewie is in the paint will be extremely beneficial and difficult for other players within this 3v3 league because of how the floor is a compressed length which allows for her to provide help side more easily.
Her journey to the WNBA started back in North Syracuse, New York. It is noted that she fell in love with the game by following her dad down to their local YMCA just to shoot on occasion as her father played pickup. Ever since that day, she would embark on a remarkable career with multiple championships and countless awards, but for her that’s not enough. She’s only 29 years old and she’s continuing to be a trailblazer within the game of women’s basketball. Stewart said her motivation for creating this league alongside fellow player and co-founder Naphessa Collier was to increase the branding and marketing for fellow women’s basketball players. The discrepancy in compensation amongst women’s basketball players is great, so for them to form this league that highlights 30 elite players allows them to earn more than $500,000 through the new marketing agreements, in-season tournament, and bonuses.
Breanna Stewart is continuing to win and pioneer the women’s game to brand new heights by doing more than just playing the game, but essentially re-inventing it.
